I would have to agree with one of my media specialist colleagues in our districtl that podcasting would seem to have some barriers to cross in order to be applied in the school setting.
However, podcasting could provide a way to link to important events or special topics that could be listened to at home. Also, I don't see why an educational podcast couldn't be played on computers by students at school, especially if provided head-phones.

Podcasts could be another way for students to present what they have learned. An elementary school could have a podcast, about school events, like you suggested. Another idea I had last spring for Tech Club (that never took off, due to time) was having older students reading stories for families to listen to, at home, on an ipod, etc.
I agree with your other point about students listening to educational content, too. If a student was absent, he/she could listen to the missed content from home.
